Brief
You have asked by the Auckland War Memorial Museum to design an historical house for an upcoming exhibit. You are to research and design a house that is typical of a particular time period and region. The design must be based on real examples. You will also gather and report on the building materials and techniques used in constructing the house. You can select the time period and region for your house.

Sample ideas:
  • Viking houses from Scandinavia, circa 800-1000 AD
  • RomanGreek villas in Mediterranean, circa 100 BC - 100 AD
  • American/Canadian Red Indians
  • Japanese/Chinese housing
  • Modern housing up to 1930s
  • Medieval Castles

1. Gather/Organise

2. Identify
  • a. Explain the task in your own words.
  • b. Investigate some examples (and your teacher will show you some too)

    • · Look at four different historical housing designs and find three common similarities and three differences - one will become the house that you will create in Sketchup
    • · What materials do they use?
    • · Get a snapshot of each.
3. Decide
  • a. Prioritise your housing design ideas.
  • b. Explain your reasons for this order eg is the design interesting, challenging, is the historical period appealing to you?
  • c. Try out your ideas in a rough sketch labelling what tools you might use to create this house in Sketchup.
4. Implement
  • a. Start your design based on the information you have gathered.
  • b. Keep a regular record of your progress in a word document.
    • i. Outline any difficulties you are having and how you have overcome them
    • ii. Add pictures of your progress. Show your design at different stages.
5. Evaluate
